Scott Walter Sure. The term “dark money” was invented in 2010 by a left-leaning nonprofit called the Sunlight Foun- dation. They used it only to refer to 501(c)4 groups  political nonprofits  who don’t disclose their donors. Since then, dark money has been used with- out any precision by left-wing folks to refer to any groups that donate to Republicans. Then and now, the left wants to make these groups into a “bogeyman” to scare people. AMAC We know, in part thanks to CRC’s work, that both Republicans and Demo- crats accept money from groups with anonymous donors. Is it accurate to say dark money is an unavoidable reality of our political system?

SW Everyone  every cause on every part of the spectrum  uses “dark money.” It is a universal technology; to say a group uses dark money is like saying a group uses telephones. That’s something the left doesn’t want you to know. Another thing the left doesn’t want you to know is that they’ve got lots more of this “dark money.” That’s been confirmed by even left-leaning organizations and news outlets. AMAC We’ve heard plenty about dark money groups on the right thanks to hit pieces in the legacy media. Do we know anything about who is pulling the strings behind the scenes on the

left for some of their more extreme efforts, like illegal protests outside the homes of Supreme Court Justices? SW There are a number of shady groups that act as conduits for bigger and more public organizations. The classic example is a group called the Alliance for Global Justice and the Occupy Wall Street Movement. Big liberal groups like the Ford Foundation, for instance, are not going to send orga- nizers into community parks to hand out megaphone batteries and toilet paper. But Ford can give money to the Alliance for Global Justice  which, by the way, posts literal Communist Party propaganda on their website  to go out and do that, and in that way,
