ventions is not abuse or neglect — it is a parent rightfully making a deci- sion for his or her child. No system should remove a child, or investigate a family for abuse, based on this deci- sion. Nor should a hospital or state be able to circumvent a parent’s right to decide whether his or her child should undergo gender-transition interventions.” The congresswoman then told the media what she planned to do as chairwoman of the Education Committee: “Committee Republi- cans will work to protect the rights of parents to safeguard their child’s education and curb the unchecked power of teachers unions. We will also fight to promote free speech on college campuses, defend the integ- rity of women’s sports, and imple- ment common-sense reforms to the federal student loan program.” Rep. Foxx would be wise to take a seri- ous look at teachers unions, not only because of their iron grip over Amer- ica’s education but because of how their actions during the pandemic set millions of children back. Unions went on strike to avoid returning to the classroom and enforced heavy- handed mask mandates. In Chicago, when students were expected to return to in-person classroom teach- ing, the Chicago Public School teach- ers union went on strike to protest the easing of the lockdowns. Teachers unions did real harm to children by keeping them out of the classroom. According to reporting in the New York Post : “Students who were mostly remote lost roughly 50 percent of a typical school year’s math learning, a Harvard study
