Teachers Unions’ Grip on Education

I t is hard to not notice the head- lines about what is happening in our public schools today — from misguided and divisive teaching about the founding of this great country to students choosing to identify as animals (and teachers sheepishly accepting it), the pendu- lum has swung so far to the left that many parents are searching for alter- native options. Private, charter, and homeschooling have surged in recent years, and the pandemic accelerated this trend. If there is a positive side to the past few years, it is that many parents were for the first time seeing what

their kids were being taught in school. Parents finally started notic- ing the huge disconnect between the commonsense values they seek to instill in their kids and the Ameri- ca-bashing lesson plans being shoved down their children’s throats. We saw parents assert their rights and make themselves heard at school board meetings across the country on topics from critical race theory to gender identity. Gender identity seems to be a hot topic of contention with many parents, especially given the fact that some schools have reportedly kept parents in the dark about important

health issues. Reports of teachers encouraging students to “transition” and hiding it from parents are worri- some, to say the least. Fortunately, some members of Congress have been listening to their constitu- ents who say enough is enough. In December, federal legislation was offered to protect parents against child protective services if they inter- vene in a child’s attempt to undergo irreversible life-changing surgery. The bill’s main sponsor, Virginia Foxx (R- NC ), who will now be chairing the Workforce and Education Commit- tee in the House, told the media: “Determining your child is not going to receive gender transition inter-
