After the Vietnam War, our military was a husk of itself, riven not just by anti-American ideology but by alco- hol, drugs, and rock-bottom morale. Our cities had suffered riots, looting, and literally thousands of bombings at the hands of such groups as the Weather Underground, the Symbi- onese Liberation Army, and the Black Panthers.
Under President Carter, American leadership was at its nadir. Moscow laughed at Washington. The Soviets invaded Afghanistan. The mullahs deposed the Shah, and no one took America seriously as a nation. Then the Gipper arrived, and it was “morning again in America.” Led by a man who loved the United States, who believed in it, and who wasn’t afraid, we soon became that “shining city on a hill” once more. And with the support of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Pope Saint John Paul II, America won the Cold War, prevented WWIII, and witnessed the fall of the Iron Curtain. Stunning achievements.
“Peace through power” does work when it is implemented by those who believe in the greatest nation on God’s green earth.
