TEST YOUR ROLLERSKATING KNOWLEDGE!

which paved the way for roller rinks nationwide. It seemed like the roller skates were made for the growing nation. Because what’s one thing a growing suburbia is in no short supply of? Pavement. America is a country built around park- ing lots and roads, and it embodies the perfect habitat for the intrigued prospective skater. As the roads to new American cities weaved throughout the nation, so did the wheels of roller skat- ers along with them. By the 1950s, roll- er-skating was named the most popular sport in America and integrated into almost every school system. It was a phenomenon that prompted house- wives to stay slim and trim and build agility and confidence in their small children, making for the perfect family activity. Even the rising fast-food craze played a part by allowing for more effi- cient food delivery from the stowed- away kitchen to the large, packed-out parking lots. It wasn’t until the 1980s that rubber wheels were introduced. These made for a quieter ride, a smoother glide, and no damage to gymnasium floors. The once outdoor rinks were driven inside, and everyone loved the quieter wheels because how could you enjoy the sounds of 80s electric guitars and synthesizers with loud wheels getting in the way? Today, millions of Americans still enjoy roller-skating across the coun- try. But let us not forget the fluid growth it reaped from our country’s unique founding.
