Dear AMAC Member, For more than a century, immigrants have come to the United States and been greeted by those famous words etched on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Sadly, Joe Biden has effectively redefined those beautiful words to sound more like this: “Give me your tired, your poor, your felons and drug cartels, your rapists and child traffickers, your dangerous thugs, and those who favor tyranny over freedom….” A nation that cannot control its borders is a nation in decline. If we forget history, we are destined to repeat it. The great historian Victor Davis Hanson issues a stark warning: “Civilizations such as the Aztecs and Byzantines were not fully cognizant that they were in decline and did not recognize that their enemies wished to be rid of them…” (Read his incredible interview on page 20). Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” Do we recognize that our enemies wish to be rid of us along with our Western values? Are we aware that while crime and the cost of living soars, our enemies are infiltrating every aspect of our culture? Are Americans mindful that we are at a major crossroads, with the outcome of the 2024 presidential election defining what it will mean to live in a free America? America cannot afford to misjudge its enemies, yet the radical Left welcomes them into our country with open arms. At the same time, the liberal elites are trying to brainwash our children into believing that America is an inherently flawed nation. This is what our enemies want us to believe. But the vast majority of Americans know better. The American spirit is resilient and optimistic, and I am convinced that there are more good citizens than those who wish to replace our constitutional republic with a social- ist regime. Together, we will uphold the values that have always made America the greatest nation on earth. May God bless you, and may He always protect this land that we so dearly love!

Five Things the GOP Needs to Do to Win in 2024 GUEST COLUMN

can leaders should encourage early voting, ballot harvesting where it’s legal, and strenuous election oversight. Win Media Battles Legacy media is the Democrats’ primary and most useful politi- cal weapon against Republicans. Whereas the media used to be merely biased, now it is engaged in outright propaganda. It is responsible for craft- ing fake news, such as the Russia collusion lie and the Kavanaugh rape smear. It will frame and amplify stories that help Democrats and downplay and mischaracterize those that help Republicans. Legacy media helps Democrats normalize lawfare, push radical transgender ideology, keep borders open, and pass anti-po- lice initiatives. Republican leaders need to be far smarter at engaging the media as an actual political opponent, if not their primary political opponent. At every opportunity, they must publicly ques-

Election Day where people arrive to vote and where results are announced the same evening, we now have an “election season.” The period can last weeks and even months before and after Election Day. Tens of millions of unsupervised ballots are mailed to addresses and trafficked by armies of left-wing activists who are fielded by well-funded outside groups. Then, lawyers fight over the rules determin- ing the eligibility of those ballots. Until Republicans can successfully improve election laws in their states, they must stay competitive with Democrats, who will be aggressively banking votes months before Elec- tion Day. Republicans will need to compete with Democrat infrastruc- tures including unions and other special interest groups that are paid to traffic mail-in ballots. And they’ll have to perform oversight of the entire months-long election season, not just Election Day. If they want to win elections in competitive districts, Republi-

R epublican presidential nominee Donald Trump is leading in the polls, even as Democrat politi- cians and their policies are receiving historically low approval ratings. But if Republicans think that all it’s going to take to win in November is to show up in force on Election Day, they need to wake up. Here are five things that the GOP needs to do to secure victory in November. Vote Operations The nature of elections has changed radically in recent years. Instead of an

08 • AMAC Magazine

Copy Effective Campaign Tricks from 2016 When Donald Trump was running for his first term, many conservatives were worried. Notably, they were concerned about whether Trump was as conservative as he claimed, particularly regarding judicial nomi- nees. To assuage those concerns, he presented a list of potential Supreme Court nominees and prom- ised to pick from it. One of every four Trump voters told pollsters that concern about the courts determined their vote. Trump should consider naming potential justices and cabinet offi- cials. The move could help voters feel confident about what a second Trump administration would accom- plish and could generate excite- ment about moving the country in a better direction. Republicans should forcefully communicate a unified message, have the courage to take on corrupt media, and prepare a laser-focus on “get out the vote” operations. tion the framing and language that the media uses and forcefully high- light its lies when engaging with it. Fight Lawfare Democrats are engaged in a coor- dinated strategy to bankrupt and imprison their top political oppo- nents through “lawfare.” They even attempted to remove the Repub- lican candidate from the ballot, a move reminiscent of tin-pot dicta- torships or other corrupt countries, which was stopped by the Supreme Court in a rare 9-0 decision. Other legally preposterous cases have been brought by Democrat prose- cutors in New York, Arizona, Georgia, and Washington, DC. In several cases, these prosecutors won their perch by campaigning on promises to engage in lawfare against Republicans. This lawfare strategy violates all norms against using courts to punish politi- cal opponents. Republican voters need to send a loud, clear message to their repre- sentatives in Washington that they must get serious about fighting back against the weaponization of the justice system by Democrats to win elections. After the FBI raided Trump’s home in Florida, former Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy said the Justice Department had reached “an intol- erable state of weaponized politici- zation” and told Attorney General Merrick Garland to “preserve your documents and clear your calen- dar” for Republican congress- ional investigations.

Yet, the GOP-led House of Repre- sentatives has done next to noth- ing to hold the Justice Department accountable for prosecuting Trump for allegedly harboring classified documents, even though Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton were excused for worse instances of committing the same supposed crime. Criminally charging one’s opponents to win elections is the real threat to democ- racy, and voters need to demand that Republicans in Washington fight this with everything they’ve got. Clearly Articulate Policy Goals Before the 2022 midterm elections, which proved disappointing for Republicans, Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell rejected calls to release a platform of what Repub- licans would do if they were given control of Congress. His claim was that focusing on Biden’s deficiencies would be sufficient for victory. While it’s true that Americans are deeply dissatisfied with Democrat policies, it’s not true that this dissat- isfaction translates into Republican votes. Republicans must explain how they’re different from Democrats and how that difference will help improve the lives of voters. This task is made more difficult when Republi- cans in the House and Senate vote to advance Democrat policy goals. Still, the recently elected Republicans in the House and Senate are articu- lating domestic and foreign policy goals that are more in touch with average Americans.

BOoM bUsT FROM TRUMP TO BIDENOMICS

H ave you noticed that Joe Biden isn’t using the term “Bidenom- ics” much anymore? It turns out most Americans are turned off by this term and for good reason. The policies are a flop, and working-class Americans, as well as retirees, know it and feel it when they struggle to pay the bills. What a reversal of fortune from when Trump was president during what I hope will be known as his first of TWO terms in office.

Here’s an example of the superior- ity of the Trump record. First, while Trump was president, the inflation rate averaged just a bit over 2 percent, and the month he left office, it had fallen to 1.6 percent one of the lowest rates in forty years. Then Biden comes into office with his $5 trillion spend and borrow and print money economic program, and in 18 months, the inflation rate zoomed all the way up to 9.1 percent. How do you screw up the economy that quickly? Was he trying to ruin the American

economy? Was he trying to emulate Jimmy Carter? Mercifully, the inflation rate has started to recede since the end of 2022, but the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers indicate we are headed back to 4.5 percent or more. Overall consumer prices have risen roughly 20 percent since Biden took the White House. But the necessities continue to rise much faster than that as anyone who buys grocer- ies, goes to the gas pump, or pays monthly bills knows. continued on page 12

“ARE YOU BETTER OFF THAN YOU WERE FOUR YEARS AGO?”

Consider the calamity of energy prices. Biden came into office declar- ing war on American energy — and he’s winning. Remember, his first act in office was to kill the vital Keystone XL pipeline by which American oil and gas could be transported to American communities. The gas price was $2.50 a gallon when Trump left office. Now, in most markets, it is $3.50 to $4.00 a gallon. In California, gas is above $5 a gallon. Overall energy prices are up 41 percent in the first 40 months of Biden’s presidency. For those trying to afford a new home, the costs are even more explosive. The average payment on a 30-year mortgage was about $2,000 a month under Trump. Now, it is closer to $3,000 a month. This is nearly a 50 percent price hike. Why? Because the mortgage interest rate has spiked to 7.1 percent nationally from 3 percent in 2020. Then, of course, there is the calam- ity of our national debt. It’s skyrock- eted by an estimated $6 trillion in Biden’s first three and a half years of office. Even Biden admits that if he is reelected, we will borrow $1 trillion a year for the next decade. He doesn’t even PRETEND to have a plan to get near a balanced budget.

All of this is already causing an extreme affordability crisis for work- ing-class families and retirees on a fixed income. More Americans than ever are going into debt to pay their bills thanks to Biden’s policies. Earlier this year, credit card bills surpassed $1 trillion for the first time ever. Delinquencies on credit card payments are starting to rise because parents don’t have the money to pay the escalating bills. So the question that Trump will be asking Americans as the election approaches is this: Are you better off than you were four years ago? Well, under Trump, median income after inflation rose by $6,000. Under Biden the average family has LOST $2,000 of real take-home pay. Anyone up for four more years of this?

A s recent election results make clear, two groups of voters will prove decisive in the upcom- ing elections this November — young voters of Generation Z and older voters of the baby boomer and silent generations. Conservatives must do a better job of reaching these two groups if we want to win in 2024. We lead the two most prominent organizations in the country dedi- cated to serving these traditionally underrepresented generations of conservatives. The Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) is the leading conservative alternative to AARP for Americans over the age of 50. Turning Point USA, meanwhile, is the leading conservative organiza- tion giving a voice to high school and college conservatives. 2020, he lost ground with young and old voters — a trend he must reverse to retake the White House in 2024. In 2024, boomers will likely still make up the largest single genera- tion of voters and have the highest voter registration rates of any demo- graphic. Meanwhile, Gen Z represents a growing percentage of the elector- ate. During the most recent midterm cycle in 2022, Gen Z for the first time made up the entire cohort of voters aged 18–24, increasing their share of the electorate to about 10 percent. What’s more, early indications suggest that these young voters are more politically active than their parents and grandparents. Twen- ty-eight percent of 18- to 24-year-olds cast ballots two years ago, compared to the 23 percent of millennials who SAVE AMERICA Exit poll data from the last two general elections points to one obvi- ous conclusion: without improving with young and old voters, Republi- cans have an all-but-impossible path to regaining control of government this year. According to Pew, from 2016 to 2020, former President Donald Trump gained six points with millenni- als and three points with Gen Xers. Meanwhile, he lost one point with baby boomers and five points with the silent generation. Gen Z, which for the first time made up a sizable portion of the electorate at eight percent in 2020, went for Biden by about 20 points, more than any other generation. In other words, while Trump improved with middle-aged voters from 2016 to BOOMERS & GEN Z MUST WORK TOGETHER TO

voted in 2006 and 24 percent of Gen Xers who voted in 1990, when each generation first made up the whole of that age group. This should be setting off alarm bells in every Republican office around the country given that these voters, in addition to being more politically active, also appear more liberal than prior generations. However, there are also indications that young voters are open to persua- sion in their political development. According to a report from the Walton Family Foundation, just 30 percent of Gen Zers say they align with Demo- crats, compared to 24 percent who align with Republicans and 28 percent who identify as independent. Some polls now also suggest that President Trump has closed the 20-point gap from 2020 and now leads Biden among voters under 30 — a stunning turnaround that would amount to a political disaster for Biden if proven to be true. Although it has historically been the case that many young people initially vote liberal and then become more conservative with age, this shift should not be taken for granted. The conservative movement — and in particular older conservative candi- dates — must put in the work to appeal to these voters and address their concerns, chief among them

the rising cost of living and housing unaffordability. In order to make that happen, conser- vatives of every age must work together toward a common goal. Oftentimes, it can be easy to sink into a generational blame game where older and younger conservatives attack one another instead of their common enemies. We’ve all heard the stereotypes that boomers are out of touch, while Gen Zers are entitled and naïve. But if we’re going to save Amer- ica from the socialist agenda of the Left, we must recognize that every generation has unique and indis- pensable contributions to bring to the movement. Older Americans have the wisdom of experience, grounded in the tradi- tions that make our country strong. They know our nation’s history because they have lived it and can contextualize the chaos of our pres- ent moment within the broader scope of the challenges our country has overcome in their lifetime. Younger Americans have ample energy, ambition, and optimism. Ultimately, our movement is about building a future that they and their children will inherit, and no one should be more invested in that mission than those who are just coming of age.

It is in service of creating cross-gener- ational engagement that AMAC and Turning Point are working in tandem to bring Americans of all ages and backgrounds together at the People’s Convention in Detroit this June 14–16. This event, which is hosted by Turn- ing Point Action and sponsored by AMAC, will serve as the focal point of the conservative movement ahead of the Republican Convention and will equip Americans of every age with the tools, knowledge, and cross-gen- erational collaboration to achieve a historic victory in November. There are some voices in our political discourse today — even on the right — who would suggest that our country’s shifting generational composition has already doomed the conserva- tive movement. But we believe that with the right outreach and relent- less effort, American conservatism could be poised for a new golden age. We’re committed to achieving this ambitious goal, and we invite other conservative grassroots organiza- tions to join our efforts in the critical months ahead. AMAC member quote: “Great coverage for a fair price and a good quality company [that] shares my values. [PureTalk] is a non-woke company recommended by AMAC. That is where I found them. It does not matter where I am. I have coverage, and if 5G coverage is available I have 5G service. So it is a great value and no issues with service. Ample data service as well. I highly recommend using their services. ” — Mark Fergus Falls, MN

If you’re wondering how they can do that, it’s simple: PureTalk doesn’t have storefronts, they don’t run flashy, star- studded ad campaigns, and they don’t pack their plans with services you don’t want, didn’t ask for, and certainly don’t want to pay for. CAN SOCIETAL ANNIHILATION HAPPEN AGAIN? Victor Davis Hanson Discusses The End of Everything W hat caused the obliteration of major civilizations, and can that happen again even to America? Victor Davis Hanson, the esteemed classicist and military historian, discusses the themes and concerns of his important new book, The End of Everything: How Wars Descend into Annihilation , with Jack Fowler, host of The Victor Davis Hanson Show . Hanson’s investigation into

the annihilation of Thebes (335 BC), Carthage (146 BC), the Byzantine Empire (AD 1452), and the Aztec Empire (AD 1521) also offers a powerful warning to an aloof America.

FOWLER What do you mean by annihilation? And by “the end of everything,” you do indeed mean everything, yes? HANSON Yes, most wars end in stalemate or defeat, but not utter annihilation defined by the elimination of a culture, language, people, physical space, and long customs and traditions, which are so destroyed or scattered that the civilization itself disappears. Yet, on a few rare occasions in history, defeats can descend into extinc-

HANSON At the time of their disappearances, they were not fully cognizant that (1) they were in decline, and (2) their enemies were existential and wished to be rid of them in toto . All had remarkable capital cities with impregnable fortifications or so they thought. All had allies they also assumed would rally to their defense. And all misjudged entirely the nature of the would-be conquerors they faced outside their walls. They had never quite experienced men like Alexander the Great, Scipio Aemil-

tion. After such destruction, there are no more Boeotian Thebes, no more Punic Carthage, no Byzantine Constantinople, and no more Aztec Tenochtitlan. Period. FOWLER You write that the “rendezvous with finality” is something that seems unthinkable, until it happens. What is it about a people Thebans, Aztecs, Byzantines, Carthaginians that deluded them while they faced an apocalypse?

FOWLER Your research reveals that a people on the brink believe help is on the way. Why does it never come? HANSON These cities were seen as eternally viable. So other Greeks, Punic states, Christians, and Nahuatl people assumed they would always survive and would pull through on their own as they always had. There were also resentments against the majesties of these eternal cities and some of their imperial practices, so come- uppance played a role as well. But mostly it was a question of apprais- ing relative strength, and in each case, would-be allies saw that Macedonians, Romans, Ottomans, and the Spanish had enormous advantages and would likely win, making it wiser either to stay out of the fight or to join the likely winners. FOWLER The End of Everything shows that the motivations behind these annihila- tions, while provincial and contem- porary, have lasting consequences and alter history. How are we today impacted by the obliteration of Thebes?

ianus, Mehmet II, or Hernan Cortes. They had no idea that they were in the midst of a rare perfect storm of destruction. FOWLER Consider how the Byzantine Empire was annihilated in 1453. At what key earlier point had the empire’s vital- ity begun to unravel so that utter destruction was to prove inevitable? HANSON The Eastern Romans or Byzantines were still viable after nearly 900 years until the misadventure of the Fourth Crusade when, in 1203–04, fellow Western Christians — dominated by Franks and Venetians — detoured, stormed the sea wall, and ravaged the city, taking it for decades, and key domains in the Balkans and islands of the Byzantine Empire for centu- ries. The late 13th-century restoration left a much smaller empire and one permanently at odds with the kindred West. Then, the second great plague of 1347–1400 really attenuated an already weakened empire and city, and at that point, the population, from once over one million before 1000, had dropped to perhaps 100,000 or less.

HANSON Well, no one quite thought Alexan- der, the supposed emissary of a new ecumenical creed and the protector of Hellenism, would actually destroy Thebes for its apostasy, given it was legendary — the home of the poet Pindar, the birthplace of the great myths of the House of Oedipus and Heracles, and the home of the idealistic Epaminondas’s democratic Theban hegemony. After Alexander’s leveling of the city, and killing off and enslaving almost all of the popula- tion, the Greek city-states fell into line, and he was on his way to a decade of conquest in Persia and beyond. Had Thebes survived and rallied the 1,500 city-states, the Macedonians may have reverted to their pre-Philip II irrelevancy in the affairs of Greece. The destruction of a fellow Hellenic city of such size and importance also signaled to the ancient Graeco-Ro- man world that anything was possible. FOWLER You’ve visited the sites of these once-great cities. As you wrote and researched The End of Everything , what did you notice about the ruins of Constantinople, Carthage, and

ALL HAD REMARKABLE CAPITAL CITIES WITH IMPREGNABLE FORTIFICATIONS—OR SO THEY THOUGHT. ALL HAD ALLIES THEY ALSO ASSUMED WOULD RALLY TO THEIR DEFENSE. AND ALL MISJUDGED ENTIRELY THE NATURE OF THE WOULD-BE CONQUERORS THEY FACED OUTSIDE THEIR WALLS.

HANSON Even those who chant that mantra know it is synony- mous with calls to destroy the Jewish people from the Jordan River to the Mediter- ranean. From time to time, Iranian mullahs talk of Israel as a “one-bomb” state or allude to the fact that concentrating 11 million Jews in such a small place simplified their desire to destroy world Jewry. And not even humanitarian, left-wing college presidents stop such calls for genocide of their campus, often from guest students from the Middle East on generous Gulf-sup- plied scholarships. Existential destruction is very possible today, given modern tools — nuclear, bio-chemical, gain-in-function viruses, and artificial intelligence — make mass destruction much easier than with muscular labor. And, of course, morality has not much if any at all evolved, as we saw on Octo- ber 7, when both Hamas gunmen and Gazan civilians in a nanosecond reverted to premodern savagery and the grotesqueness of beheading, mass raping, mutilation, incineration, torture, and hostage-taking at a time of peace. Small, vulnerable peoples like the Kurds, Armenians, Greeks, and Jews and Israelis have suffered widescale death and destruction by hostile neighbors. And oddly, from time to time, we still hear calls for eliminationist wars from the likes of Russian parliamentarians, unhinged Chinese communist generals, and President Erdogan of Turkey.

FOWLER What are the signs that America takes comfort in the idea, “It can never happen here?” HANSON We’ve become a very rich, leisured, insular, self-congratulatory, and self-deluded society that believes we are eternal, even as we run up $36 trillion in debt and are dangerously short of munitions and a deterrent military as in the past. The country is divided and perhaps more sectarian than at any time since 1860. There is a new Russia/China/Iran/North Korea axis, and old allies like Qatar and Turkey act like new enemies. The military is short recruits and has been politically weaponized along DEI lines, even after it suffered utter humil- iation in Afghanistan and saw US foreign policy collapse in Ukraine, the Middle East, and the Red Sea. Each new weapon system, from hypersonic nuclear-tipped weapons to viruses and satellite killers, inches us toward Armageddon — if enemies feel we’ve lost deterrence and therefore dare to try something stupid. Victor Davis Hanson is a military histo- rian, classicist, political commentator, and farmer. He is Senior Fellow in Residence at the Hoover Institution at Stanford Univer- sity and a Distinguished Fellow in History at Hillsdale College. Hanson is the author of hundreds of articles, scholarly papers, and newspaper editorials on matters ranging from ancient Greek, agrarian and military history to foreign affairs, domes- tic politics, and contemporary culture. His website is victorhanson.com .

Thebes that pointed to their inevita- ble destruction? HANSON I’ve been to both cities several times. The land wall at Constantinople still amazes one with its stoutness and apparent impenetrability (had the Byzantines had 20,000 defenders on them instead of 7,000 on May 23, 1453, they would easily have held out). The Theban walls are harder to see, given the Macedonians a few years after the destruction built a new city on top of the ancient one. Both the cities are surrounded by rich farmland and on important transit routes. And of course, Constantinople was felt to be the European gateway to Asia and the East and controller at the Bospo- rus and Dardanelles of all east–west naval commerce. FOWLER Is “from the river to the sea” a code phrase for the annihilation of Israel and the Jewish people?
