than 30 seconds of fuel remaining. They walked on July 20, 1969. Military ingenuity — a sense of being “able to handle it” — personified all the Apollo crews, but Apollo 11 had to deal with something else unexpected. To get off the moon, they had to inno- vate again. A backpack broke off the ascent engine toggle, which forced Buzz to use a pen — a felt-tipped pen — to press the circuit breaker in, allow- ing the engine to light, a return to the command module, and home. Finally, when the moon missions wrapped up, many left NASA for corporate, government, or teaching jobs and did well. Buzz saw things differently. His life commitment was to being an Air Force officer. He returned from the moon a demigod

and toured the world for civilian NASA but returned to the Air Force. As fate would have it, much of his later life has been spent as an ambas- sador of American goodwill, urging ideas like space tourism, human space exploration, getting back to the moon, living permanently on Mars, bringing nations together, and help- ing the veteran community. That said, because of his time with NASA, he was not on a traditional military career path, and because he stayed in, just resuming military duties after the moon, people forget there was a cost. Now, at last, Dr. Buzz Aldrin, the pioneering Apollo 11 moon-walker, innovative thinker, and mission-fo-

cused patriot, who retired from the Air Force as a colonel — has finally gotten a long-deserved capstone. This true- blue, always-ready, always-steady, never-give-up patriot — Colonel Buzz Aldrin — has just been advanced to the rank of General Officer, properly made a Brigadier General, by the US Air Force and Congress. Hats off to Buzz, and to all the Amer- ican veterans and patriots who never forget, who seldom regret, who love this nation as he does, who give and live to serve, grateful for the chance — and who are glad, at last, to see Buzz advance. For an overdue honor, congratulations, General Buzz Aldrin, USAF!
